Early Life and Education

Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh was born in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on June 14, 1968. He graduated from Ulaanbaatar's Secondary School No. 2 before pursuing political studies at the Mongolian University of Defense in 1989. Khurelsukh furthered his education by earning degrees in public administration from the Institute of Public Administration and Management Development in 1994 and law from the National University of Mongolia in 2000.

Military Career

Prior to his political career, Khurelsukh served as a political officer in the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Army's 152nd Division. In 1990, when the government sought to depoliticize the armed forces, he became the first Mongolian officer to resign in order to maintain his party membership.

Political Career

In 1991, Khurelsukh embarked on his political journey as a political officer in the Central Committee of the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP). He served as an advisor to the MPRP parliamentary faction from 1994 to 1996. As a leading figure within the party, Khurelsukh played a key role in instituting reforms within the youth organization. He established the Democratic Socialist Youth Federation of the MPRP and served as its president from 1997 to 1999 and again from 2000 to 2005.

In 2000, Khurelsukh was elected to the MPRP's leading council. In 2008, he became the MPRP's General Secretary. In 2010, he advocated for the restoration of the party's original name, "Mongolian People's Party," which had been changed to "Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party" in 1924.

Party Leadership and Prime Ministership

On November 21, 2017, Khurelsukh was elected chairman of the party at a national convention, garnering 63% of the votes. He was elected to the State Great Khural four times—in 2000, 2004, 2012, and 2020.

Khurelsukh held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Emergency Situations (2004-2006), Minister of Inspection (2006-2008), and Deputy Prime Minister (2014-2015 and 2016-2017). On October 4, 2017, the State Great Khural unanimously approved his nomination as Prime Minister.

Presidency

In response to protests sparked by a viral video depicting the transportation of a woman in labor without appropriate clothing to a COVID-19 ward, Khurelsukh resigned as Prime Minister on January 21, 2021. The State Great Khural accepted his resignation with an overwhelming majority. He subsequently won the presidential election in June 2021, earning 72% of the vote.

Conclusion

Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh's journey from political officer to President of Mongolia reflects his unwavering commitment to serving his country. His leadership has been characterized by his dedication to reform, his advocacy for the people, and his unwavering resolve in the face of challenges.
