Biography of Julia Gnus

Julia Gnus, also known as The Illustrated Lady, is the most tattooed woman in the world, with 95 percent of her body covered in tattoos, including her face. She was born in 1959 in Flint, Michigan and currently resides in Foothill Ranch, Lake Forest, California. Julia currently holds the Guinness World Record for being the most tattooed woman in the world.

Exploring Tattoos as a Solution

However, choosing such an unusual way to stand out from the crowd was not just a whim for Julia, but rather a result of her inherited condition called porphyria, which is related to a disorder in pigment metabolism. When exposed to sunlight, the skin of those with porphyria becomes covered in blisters and sores, leaving scars behind. Julia's porphyria developed when she was in her early twenties. In an attempt to camouflage the scars, she got a few tattoos, and it seems that the process captivated her completely.

An Escape from Photodermatosis

Although the tattoos do not protect her from new manifestations of photodermatosis, they do a remarkable job in concealing the scars. There are medications available that can alleviate the condition for such patients, but Julia chooses not to take them due to the risk of blindness. According to Julia, she developed an addiction to colorful tattoos after getting her first ones on her legs. Among the vibrant designs adorning her body, there are various subjects, ranging from portraits of favorite actors to scenes from animated movies. All the artwork has been done by the same tattoo artist.
