Biography of Julia Goerges

Julia Goerges, also known as "Gorgeous Goerges," is a German tennis player who currently holds the 20th position in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) singles ranking and the 33rd position in the doubles ranking as of May 9, 2011. Born in Bad Oldesloe, Germany, Julia grew up in a family of insurance agents, Klaus and Inge Goerges. Her stepsister, Maike, also followed in her parents' footsteps, but Julia developed a passion for sports from a young age.

At the age of five, Julia had her first experience with tennis when her parents took her to a local club. Her main idols were Martina Hingis and Roger Federer. Julia was coached by Sasha Nensel, who had previously trained another well-known German athlete, Nicolas Kiefer. In 2005, Julia began her professional tennis career in the women's ITF series. Although her debut was not particularly successful, with five out of seven tournaments resulting in first-round losses, Julia remained determined.

She continued competing in ITF tournaments and achieved convincing victories in Wahlstedt and Bielefeld the following year. In 2007, Julia won tournaments in Antalya and Bucharest and made her debut in a WTA match. In her first WTA tournament, she reached the semifinals but lost to Vera Dushevina. Shortly after, Julia made her first appearance in a Grand Slam tournament, Wimbledon, but did not progress beyond the second round, losing to Marina Erakovic.

In 2008, Julia balanced her participation in ITF and WTA games. Her best results that year included reaching the semifinals of the Banka Koper Slovenia Open and the quarterfinals of the Cellular South Cup. Julia also made her debut in the top 100 rankings after the French Open. She won her first significant match in a Grand Slam tournament against Katarina Srebotnik at Wimbledon. However, she was unable to advance further, losing to Marina Erakovic again.

In 2009, Julia decided to focus more on WTA games and participated in all four Grand Slam tournaments for the first time. However, her year did not start triumphantly, with early losses in Brisbane, Australian Open, Warsaw Open, and Open GDF. Her performance at the French Open was even worse, as she had to withdraw in the first round due to heat stroke.

In 2010, Julia began the year with another loss in the first round of the ASB Classic. She had a better performance at the Australian Open, reaching the second round before facing Caroline Wozniacki. Julia also reached the quarterfinals of the Internationaux de Strasbourg and the semifinals of the Internazionali Femminili di Palermo, where she lost to Flavia Pennetta.

In 2011, Julia reached the semifinals of the ASB Classic and the third round of the Australian Open, again losing to Maria Sharapova. The third round currently stands as her best result in Grand Slam tournaments. Julia prefers playing on grass and hard courts.
