Biography of Julia Kristeva
Julia Kristeva is a French researcher of literature and language, psychoanalyst, writer, semiotician, philosopher, and speaker of Bulgarian origin. She was born in Sliven, Bulgaria and has been living in France since the 1960s. She is the wife of French writer and critic Philippe Sollers, one of the leaders of the Tel Quel group, and a mother of three children. Kristeva is known as a representative of poststructuralism and was a student of R. Barthes, as well as a propagandist and interpreter of M. M. Bakhtin's ideas. Her scientific interests include semiotics, linguistics, literary studies, and psychoanalysis.
Contributions to Theory
Kristeva is considered the founder of original theories such as "revolutionary linguopsychanalysis," intertextuality, and geno- and pheno-text. She is the author of works such as "Semiotics" (1969), "The Revolution of Poetic Language" (1974), "Polylogue" (1977), and the groundbreaking article "The Destruction of Poetics" (1967). In addition to her academic work, Kristeva is also actively engaged in public activities as a feminist and columnist. She is one of the ideologists of the LGBT movement.
Literary Works
Kristeva is also an author of several novels. Currently, only one of her novels, "Death in Byzantium," has been translated into Russian and is considered one of her best works. In this novel, Kristeva showcases her remarkable writing skills as she continues the traditions of the "semiotic" novel established by Umberto Eco. Even in her artistic work, she remains a thinker. As noted by cultural theorist A. Bespalov, "Kristeva could have chosen not to write novels, as her scientific works often resemble literature, and her literature often reveals traits of a scientific treatise" (Bespalov 2009: 312).
Psychoanalysis and Intellectual Influence
Kristeva participated in Jacques Lacan's seminars but did not join any of the Lacanian schools after the master's death. She is a titular member of the Paris Psychoanalytical Society (SPP). Psychoanalysis can be considered the cornerstone of Kristeva's life and work. The principles of text analysis used by her directly trace back to the works of Freud and Lacan, in addition to her own original developments. To this day, she regularly attends roundtables on psychoanalysis.
Future Research and Recognition
In a recent interview with "Magazine Litterature," Kristeva shared her unexpected research plans. She intends to analyze the work of the famous actress O.L. Knipper from a linguopsychanalytic perspective, seeing high humanistic significance in it. Kristeva is an honorary doctor of many universities in Europe and the United States and a member of the British Academy. One of the chapters in Alan Sokal and Jean Bricmont's book, "Intellectual Impostures," is dedicated to the usage of mathematical terminology in Kristeva's texts.
