Biography of Julia Loktev

Julia Loktev is an American film director and video artist of Russian descent. She was born in Leningrad and when she was 9 years old, her family immigrated to the United States, settling in Colorado. Loktev first studied at McGill University in Montreal and then at New York University starting in 1996.

Documentary Filmmaking

In 1998, Loktev completed her graduation project, a documentary film titled "Moment of Impact." The film depicts the daily life of her family after her father was involved in a car accident in 1989, which left him disabled. "Moment of Impact" received several awards at film festivals, including the Directing Award at the Sundance Film Festival, a prize at the San Francisco Film Festival, and the Best Documentary Film Award from Bavarian Television at the Munich Documentary Film Festival. It also won the Best Documentary Film Prize at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Artistic Film

In 2006, Loktev directed a fictional film titled "Day Night Day Night." The movie follows a female suicide bomber who is meant to carry out a terrorist attack in New York City but fails due to unforeseen circumstances. Loktev was inspired to create this film after reading about the story of Zarema Muzhakhoyeva, a Chechen terrorist who was arrested after failing to detonate a bomb in Moscow. The film starred Louise Williams and was shown in the Quinzaine des Realisateurs section at the Cannes Film Festival, where it received the Regard jeune prize. "Day Night Day Night" was also honored with the Someone to Watch Award at the Independent Spirit Festival. The film was funded by German television channel ZDF and the Franco-German channel Arte, and it was broadcasted on these channels.

Video Installations

Loktev's video installations have been showcased in renowned art institutions worldwide. Her works were exhibited at P.S.1 in New York in 2000, the House of Art in Munich in 2002, and the Tate Modern in London in 2004.

Julia Loktev currently resides in New York City.
