Biography of Juliane Banse
Early Life and EducationJuliane Banse is a German soprano singer. She spent her childhood in Zurich, where she started playing the violin at the age of five. She studied ballet at the Zurich Opera and began learning singing there as well. She continued her vocal education with Brigitte Fassbender in Munich.
Rise to Fame
In 1989, Banse won first prize at a vocal competition in Munich. That same year, she made her debut at the Berlin Comic Opera, performing the role of Pamina in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." In 1993, she received the prestigious Franz Schubert Grand Prize, with the jury including Elizabeth Schwarzkopf and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.
International Recognition
Banse made her debut in the United States in 1995, performing Mahler's Symphony No. 2 with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leonard Slatkin. In 2003, she was honored with the Robert Schumann Prize. Banse's husband, Christoph Poppen, is a violinist and conductor.
Repertoire and Achievements
Banse is known for her interpretations of songs by Brahms, Berg, vocal compositions by Mahler, György Kurtág, Jörg Widmann, as well as roles in operas by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Pfitzner, Humperdinck, and Janáček. She was the first to perform the role of Snow White in Hans Holliger's opera "Snow White" at the Zurich Opera in 1998. In 2005-2006, she participated in the world premiere of Bach's newly discovered aria "Alles mit Gott und nichts ohn' ihn" in Weimar, alongside András Schiff and the Franco-Austrian quartet Mosaïques.
Teaching Career
Since 2007, Banse has been a professor at the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts, where she shares her expertise with aspiring musicians and performers.
