Biography of Julie Parrish
Julie Parrish, born Ruby Joyce Wilbar on October 21, 1940, in Middlesboro, Kentucky, USA, was an American stage, film, and television actress. She was the eldest of six children of William Robert Wilbar and Gladys Mary Webb. Parrish spent her early years in Lake City, Tennessee, before moving to Tecumseh, Michigan, at the age of 11. She completed her schooling in Tecumseh and then attended a modeling school in Toledo, Ohio, where she won the national beauty contest "Young Model of the Year" organized by a modeling agency.
Acting Career
Parrish made her debut as an actress in Jerry Lewis films, including "It's Only Money" in 1962 and "The Nutty Professor" in 1963. She later appeared in guest roles on television series and had a minor role as June in the comedy-action film "Dobermann Gang" with Byron Mabe and Hal Reed. However, it was her role alongside Elvis Presley in the musical comedy "Paradise, Hawaiian Style" in 1966 that turned her into a star. Parrish continued to make appearances in popular TV shows such as "Gunsmoke," "Star Trek," "Bonanza," "Capitol," and "Beverly Hills, 90210." She also had a prominent role in the American sitcom "Good Morning, World" in 1967.
Theater and Writing
Parrish was well-known in the theater scene for her performances in plays such as "Absence of a Cello" and "Memo." Her portrayal of Maggie in Arthur Miller's play "After the Fall" earned her the Los Angeles Theatre Critics Award. In addition to acting, Parrish also wrote and contributed essays, articles, and reviews to various publications.
Activism and Later Years
Approaching her 50s, Parrish earned a bachelor's degree and obtained a scientific degree in "Chemical Dependency Counseling." For nine years, she worked as a consultant at the organization "Haven Hills Shelter for Battered Women," providing support to women who had experienced abuse. Sadly, Julie Parrish passed away from ovarian cancer on October 1, 2003, in Los Angeles, California. She is survived by two sisters and two brothers.
