Early Symptoms Ignored

Julie, a young American woman from New York, initially dismissed her life-threatening liver failure as a skin irritation. She ignored the vitiligo and severe itching on her legs for several years before agreeing to a lifesaving transplant after the urging of five different doctors.

Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis Diagnosis

In 2014, Julie was diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), a chronic and progressive liver disease. Despite the debilitating symptoms, including jaundice and rapid weight loss, Julie refused to believe the severity of her condition.

Denial and Deteriorating Health

As PSC advanced, Julie's denial turned into acceptance when the vitiligo spread to her face. The relentless itching prevented her from sleeping, and her skin and eyes turned yellow. Extreme fatigue and vomiting further depleted her already weakened body.

Multiple Doctor Visits and a Life-Changing Decision

After consulting with four different doctors who all confirmed her diagnosis, Julie finally found a fifth doctor who connected with her and helped her see the positive side of her situation. Three months after being placed on the transplant waiting list, Julie received a matching donor liver on June 6, 2017.

The Transplant Surgery

The transplant surgery lasted over six hours, but the severity of Julie's inflammation made it difficult to close her incision. She underwent additional surgeries to fix the issue and spent several days in intensive care before being discharged from the hospital.

Recovery and Gratitude

Julie's recovery was challenging but rewarding. The jaundice and itching subsided, and her appetite returned. She gradually regained her strength and independence, returning to her passion for farming.

Inspiration and Advocacy

Despite her health challenges, Julie remains positive and shares her story on Instagram to raise awareness about transplantation and support others who are struggling.

Understanding PSC

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a rare chronic liver disease where the bile ducts within and outside the liver narrow due to inflammation and scarring. Symptoms may not be immediately noticeable but can include fatigue, abdominal discomfort, itching, jaundice, and fevers. Currently, there is no cure for PSC, but treatments are being researched.
