Early Life and EducationBronisław Jamontt was born in Poland and pursued his passion for architecture, becoming a renowned Polish architect and architectural historian.
Academia and the University of Stefan Batory
In 1920, Jamontt joined the faculty of the University of Stefan Batory, rising to the rank of professor. He became the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts and head of the Department of Architecture from 1920 to 1929. Later, he taught history of architecture and drawing.
Architectural Contributions
Jamontt played a significant role in the reconstruction of the Peter Skarga courtyard in the Vilnius University ensemble. He also reconfigured the galleries of the Vilnius University building to facilitate its use as lecture halls and offices. Furthermore, he conducted extensive research and documentation of the architectural heritage of southeastern Lithuania and Belarus. His collection of photographs, slides, and albums serves as invaluable iconographic material preserved in archives and museums today.
Vilnius Guidebook
Jamontt's comprehensive guidebook to Vilnius became a revered publication, being reissued in 1923, 1929, and 1937. Modern phototypic editions ensure its continued availability for reference.
Legacy and Final Resting Place
Bronisław Jamontt's contributions to architecture and architectural history left an enduring legacy. He is buried at the Ross Cemetery (Rasos) in Vilnius, where his memory lives on in the streets and buildings he shaped.
