Early Life and Education

Julius Goltermann (1825-1898) was born in Germany and began studying the cello at a young age under the tutelage of Bernhard Romberg. He later continued his studies in Dresden with Friedrich August Kummer.

Career in Germany

After honing his skills, Goltermann became the principal cellist of the Hamburg Opera. From 1850 to 1862, he resided and worked in Prague, where he made a significant contribution to the musical scene.

Collaboration with Bedřich Smetana

In 1855, Goltermann performed in the premiere of Bedřich Smetana's Piano Trio Op. 15 alongside violinist Anton Bennnewitz and the composer at the piano. This performance marked a milestone in his career as an ensemble player.

Teaching at the Prague Conservatory

During his time in Prague, Goltermann taught at the Prague Conservatory. Among his notable students was David Popper, who later dedicated his first cello concerto, Op. 8, to Goltermann.

Stuttgart and Beyond

From 1862 to 1870, Goltermann held the position of principal cellist in the Stuttgart Court Orchestra. He continued to perform and teach throughout his career, leaving a lasting legacy on the world of cello playing.

Misattributed Compositions

Some sources have attributed original compositions for cello to Julius Goltermann. However, these works are in fact authored by his namesake, Georg Goltermann.
