Early Life and Career

Junius Spencer Morgan was born into a wealthy family in Massachusetts. He inherited a substantial fortune from his father in 1829 and began his business career in Hartford and Boston. Morgan quickly multiplied his wealth, becoming a partner in the mercantile firm "J. M. Beebe & Co." and later in "George Peabody & Co." in London.

Success in London

In 1864, upon John Peabody's retirement, Morgan took over the leadership of the firm, which was renamed "J.S. Morgan & Co." Under his guidance, the company became one of the most prominent financial institutions in Europe.

Return to the United States

Morgan returned to the United States in 1877 and continued his successful career in finance. He amassed a fortune estimated at $10 million (equivalent to over $270 million in 2017).

Morgan married Juliet Pierpont in 1836, and they had five children:
