Biography of Richard Arkwright

Richard Arkwright, an English entrepreneur, was born on December 23, 1732, in Preston, Lancashire. After venturing into inventing in 1767, he moved to Nottingham in 1768. In 1769, Arkwright obtained a patent for the water frame, a spinning machine that produced yarn with increased twist for the warp, which greatly reduced the cost of producing cotton fabric and led to the modernization of the textile industry.

In collaboration with J. Smalley, Arkwright established a small factory in Nottingham. Later, he joined forces with J. Strutt and S. Needham, wealthy owners of hosiery factories. In 1771, the partners decided to build a spinning mill with water-powered engines on the River Derwent in Cromford, and by 1774, they employed 600 people.

Arkwright received a patent for the roller spinning principle in 1775, and within five years, the partners expanded their production extensively. After severing his business ties with Strutt in 1781, Arkwright independently opened spinning mills in Manchester, Matlock, Belper, and, in collaboration with D. Dale, in New Lanark, establishing the textile industry in northern England.

In 1786, Arkwright was appointed Sheriff of Derbyshire and was knighted. He passed away on August 3, 1792, in Cromford, Derbyshire.
