Early Life and Climbing Career

Junko Tabei was born on September 22, 1939, in Misawa, Japan. As a frail and sickly child, she was encouraged by her parents to join a sports club to improve her health. Little did they know that she would become one of the greatest mountaineers in history.

Ascending the Heights

Tabei's passion for mountaineering took root in 1949. She joined the Nihon Mountaineering Association in 1958 and graduated from Showa Women's University in 1962. In 1969, she founded the Ladies Climbing Club (LCC) to promote women's participation in the sport.

Between 1958 and 1972, Tabei scaled Mount Fuji, the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps, and the eight-thousanders Annapurna and Shishapangma.

Conquering Everest

In 1972, Tabei assembled an all-female team to tackle Mount Everest. On May 16, 1975, after a treacherous ascent and a near-fatal snowstorm, she became the first woman to reach the summit of the world's highest mountain.

Global Recognition and Legacy

Tabei's historic achievement brought her worldwide fame and accolades. She received government honors, starred in a television series, and embarked on a national tour of Japan. However, her pursuit of records continued. In 1992, she became the first woman to climb the Seven Summits, the highest peaks on each continent.

Life Beyond Climbing

Beyond her mountaineering feats, Tabei was an active environmentalist. She participated in global clean-up campaigns and led volunteer expeditions to remove litter from mountain slopes. She was also a passionate advocate for youth development, sharing her experiences and training young climbers.

Personal Life and Legacy

Tabei married Masanobu Tabei and had two children, a daughter and a son. She remained an active member of the LCC throughout her life, attending events and mentoring young climbers.

Passing and Impact

In 2012, Tabei was diagnosed with peritoneal cancer. After a four-year battle, she passed away on October 20, 2016, at the age of 77. Her indomitable spirit and groundbreaking achievements continue to inspire climbers and adventurers worldwide.
