Arturas Zuokas: A Political and Public Figure
Arturas Zuokas is a Lithuanian politician and public figure with a background in civil engineering. After graduating from high school in Ukmergė in 1958 and a construction technical school in Vilnius in 1961, he obtained a degree from the Vilnius branch of the Kaunas Polytechnic Institute in 1967.
Academic and Professional Background
From 1967 to 1970, Zuokas served as a research assistant at the Vilnius branch of the Kaunas Polytechnic Institute. He then worked in various construction organizations and supply and sales departments for different companies. In 1995-1997, he held the position of director of the closed joint-stock company "Naujamiesčio būstas" of the Vilnius City Municipality.
Political Career in Vilnius
Zuokas was first elected to the Vilnius City Council in 1997. He served as the First Deputy Mayor of Vilnius from 1997 to 1999, Mayor of Vilnius from June 1999 to April 2000, and Deputy Mayor from 2000 to 2003. In 2003-2007, he was an advisor to the leader of the Liberal Democrat faction in the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania. Since April 16, 2007, he has been the Mayor of Vilnius.
Political Affiliations
Zuokas was a member of the Lithuanian Liberal Union from 1999. After its split in 2002, he joined the Order and Justice party.
Foreign Language Proficiency and Family Life
Zuokas is proficient in English, Polish, and Russian. He is married with a daughter and a son.
Mayor of Vilnius and Removal from Office
In February 2009, a majority vote in the Vilnius City Council removed Zuokas from the position of Mayor. However, he characterized this decision as illegal.
Member of the European Parliament
Zuokas was elected to the European Parliament from the Order and Justice party in the elections held in Lithuania on June 7, 2009.
