Jurelang Zedkaia: Paramount Chief, President of the Marshall Islands

Early Life and Career

Jurelang Zedkaia was born into the Iroij (paramount chief) family of Majuro Atoll in the Marshall Islands. He worked in the pharmaceutical industry and served as a health, education, and social services officer for the Majuro Atoll Local Government (MALGOV).

Political Career

In 1981, Zedkaia was elected Senator in the Nitijela, the national assembly of the Marshall Islands. In January 2008, he was chosen as Speaker of the Nitijela.

Presidency

On October 26, 2009, Zedkaia became the fifth President of the Marshall Islands following a vote of no confidence in President Litokwa Tomeing.

Paramount Chief

In November 2011, following the passing of his mother, Zedkaia inherited the title of Iroij of Majuro Atoll. As such, he served as both President of the Marshall Islands and Paramount Chief of the capital atoll.

Term in Office

During his presidency from 2009 to 2012, Zedkaia focused on economic development, environmental protection, and improving education and healthcare. He also worked to strengthen relationships with the United States, Japan, and other regional partners.
