Justina Machado is an American actress of Puerto Rican descent who has gained quite a bit of recognition in the industry. Her most famous role is Vanessa Diaz in the HBO series 'Six Feet Under'.

Early Life and Education

Machado was born in Chicago, Illinois, where her family moved to from Puerto Rico. She grew up with two siblings, but her parents divorced and her mother remarried, giving birth to three more children.

In her childhood, Machado actively participated in all the school theatrical productions. When she entered Lane Technical College Prep High School in 1986, she spent all her free time at the Latino Chicago Theater Company. She completed her education at Lane Tech in 1990 and set off to conquer New York.

Rise to Fame

In New York, Machado's experience in theater proved more valuable than her technical knowledge, opening doors to a successful acting career. She received an invitation to move to Los Angeles and become a professional actress. In 1996, she landed her first two roles - Elsa in the three hundred eleventh episode of 'NYPD Blue' and Val Ho in the TV movie 'No One Would Tell'.

On June 10, 2001, Machado auditioned for the series 'Six Feet Under' and was cast as Vanessa Diaz. She started as a supporting character but eventually became one of the main characters in the show. Alongside the rest of the cast, Machado received a 'Screen Actors Guild Award' for 'Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series'. She appeared in all five seasons of the show, which ended in 2005. Additionally, she also appeared in Canadian television productions.

Filmography and Theater

Machado has appeared in several films, including 'She's So Lovely', 'Full Frontal', 'Final Destination 2', 'The Punisher', and 'The Accidental Husband'. She is also a talented and sought-after theater actress, having performed in renowned plays such as 'Some Girl(s)' at the Geffen Playhouse, 'Blade to the Heat' and 'Black Butterfly' at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, and 'In the Heights' on Broadway, where she replaced actress Andrea Burns.

In 2003, Machado appeared in the music video for 'Damaged' by TLC, portraying a woman struggling in a troubled relationship.
