Biography of Kazuhito Yamashita

Kazuhito Yamashita is a Japanese classical guitarist who gained worldwide recognition in the second half of the 1970s. He began learning to play the guitar at the age of eight under the guidance of his father, Toru Yamashita, and later studied at the Nagasaki Academy of Music with Kojiro Kobune.

Early Career and International Success

Yamashita's career took off when he won the Japanese Guitar Competition, followed by the Ramirez Competition in Spain, the Alexandria Competition in Italy, and eventually the International Guitar Competition in Paris, where he became the youngest winner. These accomplishments led to concerts in Tokyo and Amsterdam, solidifying his reputation as a remarkable guitarist.

Unique Musical Interpretations

In 1984, Yamashita performed at the Toronto Guitar Festival, where he premiered his own arrangement of Modest Mussorgsky's famous piano cycle "Pictures at an Exhibition." This performance created a sensation among the audience and music critics. He also arranged Stravinsky's "The Firebird," Dvorak's Ninth Symphony, Beethoven's Heroic Symphony, and several other compositions for the guitar. Yamashita's repertoire spans from the Renaissance era to contemporary compositions.

Active Concert Performer and Technical Innovator

Currently, Yamashita continues to actively perform both as a soloist and in collaboration with other musicians and orchestras. His performances are characterized by his delicate technique, wide dynamic range, and deep understanding of style. Yamashita has expanded the technical possibilities of guitar playing, using various types of tremolo, resonant sounds, and more.

Recording Projects and Original Compositions

The guitarist enthusiastically participates in major recording projects. He has recorded the complete works of Fernando Sor on sixteen compact discs and arranged all of J.S. Bach's sonatas, partitas, and suites for violin, cello, flute, and lute for the guitar. Additionally, Yamashita has composed several original works for the guitar.

Kazuhito Yamashita is undoubtedly one of the most prominent classical guitarists of our time, known for his exceptional skill, extensive repertoire, and innovative interpretations.
