Early Life and Influences
Steven Lee Lukather was born on October 21, 1957, in the San Fernando Valley, California. At the age of seven, he began playing keyboards and drums. His passion for guitar was ignited when his father gifted him with an acoustic guitar and a copy of The Beatles' "Meet the Beatles" album. Lukather described The Beatles' music as "life-changing" and was particularly influenced by George Harrison's guitar playing.
Joining Toto
In high school, Lukather met David Paich and the Porcaro brothers (Jeff, Steve, and Mike), who would later form the band Toto. Despite being self-taught, Lukather sought guitar lessons from Jimmy Wyble, who expanded his guitar abilities and led him to perform with various notable musicians across genres.
In 1976, Paich and Jeff Porcaro invited Lukather to join Toto, then known as Los Lobotomys. Lukather, having declined an offer from Miles Davis, enthusiastically accepted the invitation to join his friends.
Grammy Awards and Accolades
Lukather has been nominated for 12 Grammy Awards, winning five. His exceptional guitar playing has earned him recognition in the industry. He is known for recording tracks in single takes with minimal overdubbing and plays a signature Music Man Luke electric guitar.

His collaborations include work with artists such as Boz Scaggs, Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton, and Miles Davis.
