Karen Dawson's Biography

Struggle with Obesity

Karen Dawson, a 40-year-old woman from Wales, made the decision to fight her obesity after an embarrassing incident at her mother-in-law's funeral. When a church pew cracked under Karen's weight, she finally vowed to start working on her health.

Unhealthy Habits

Karen Dawson, originally from Wales, faced problems as soon as she started living on her own at the age of 18. Being away from the watchful eyes of her family, Karen indulged excessively in sweets, chips, chocolate, and cookies. When she got married, nothing pleased her more than spending evenings being inactive with her husband Warren, a 48-year-old employee of British Airways. By the time her sons Mackenzie turned seven, Jackson turned three, and Dexter turned two, Karen weighed nearly 170 kg. However, this did not stop her from further overeating, and Mrs. Dawson continued to find herself in various unpleasant situations due to her weight.

Embarrassing Experiences

Karen recalls, "I tried to get into a local bar, and the doorman told me I simply couldn't enter because of my size. He just said I was too fat. I was so shocked that I turned around and left. I didn't know how to react." Another incident occurred when Karen went to a football match with her husband and found herself too large to fit through the turnstile. Warren had to literally squeeze her through the gap. Additionally, Karen broke numerous office chairs due to her weight. She says, "Every time I dined out, I had to ask the restaurant staff not to seat me in a booth where I couldn't fit... Clothing was also a problem for me. When I applied for a job at a supermarket, they told me not to bother because they didn't have a uniform that would fit me."

Turning Point

The final straw came at her mother-in-law's funeral in 2011 when the church pew cracked under Mrs. Dawson. Karen remembers, "The pew didn't break to the extent that everyone fell off, but I was horrified that something like that could happen during a funeral. We watched as the coffin was being lowered, and at that moment, I wanted the ground to swallow me up. As soon as the funeral was over, I tried to leave as quickly as possible, and I was very ashamed." After this incident, Karen decided it was time to join a local weight-loss group called "Slimming World" in Llantwit Fardre. She also started paying attention to what and how she ate.

Weight Loss Journey

Before her significant weight loss, Karen stopped having breakfast. For lunch, she would have an egg and mayonnaise sandwich, chips, and sweets. For dinner, she would order Indian food – chicken korma, rice, chips, and onion bhajis. Currently, Karen starts her day with bran flakes and prepares homemade vegetable soup with lean minced beef, potatoes, and reduced-fat chili (chili con carne) for lunch and dinner. The mother of three now weighs 114.7 kg. She emphasizes that she still wants to lose more weight but also acknowledges that she has already done a lot in the past year to feel a huge difference compared to how her life used to be. Karen says, "I ate whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted, until I became truly huge. I never thought about what I was doing to my body." She saw people staring at her, but she got used to portraying herself as a jolly fat girl ready to laugh at herself. However, Karen was never truly happy on the inside. After making changes, she went to see a play, "A Christmas Carol," featuring her son, which she had missed a year ago. She sat in the front row, knowing that no other parents or children would dare to make any fat jokes about her.
