Early Life and Family

Ashot Grigoryan was born on April 15, 1953, to renowned Armenian poet Aшот Граши and a professor of philology. His twin brother, Levon Grigoryan, would also become a renowned chess player in Armenia.

Chess Career

Grigoryan exhibited exceptional chess talent from a young age. He emerged as the Champion of the Armenian SSR in 1969, 1970, and 1972. In 1975 and 1979, he captured the prestigious Moscow Championship.

In 1973, Grigoryan achieved extraordinary success by securing 8th place in the 41st USSR Championship in Moscow, a tournament that featured five world champions. This remarkable performance cemented his status as an international master.

Grigoryan was particularly renowned for his prowess in blitz chess, where he consistently triumphed in traditional tournaments sponsored by the newspaper "Vechernyaya Moskva." He gained recognition as one of the Soviet Union's foremost lightning chess experts.

Personal Life and Tragedy

Grigoryan's personal life was marked by both triumph and tragedy. While he enjoyed great success in chess, his brother, Levon, struggled with mental health issues. On October 30, 1989, Levon took his own life by leaping from Yerevan's tallest bridge.
