Biography of Karen Kain

Karen Alexandria Kain was born on March 28, 1951, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. She is a renowned Canadian ballerina who retired in 1997.

Early Life and Training

Karen's mother introduced her to ballet, believing it would improve her posture and discipline. At the age of eleven, Karen began her training at the National Ballet School of Canada in 1962. After graduating from the ballet school in 1967, she was invited to join the National Ballet of Canada.

Ballet Career

In 1971, Karen Kain became a principal dancer in the company, earning the opportunity to perform the most challenging roles. Through her collaboration with the legendary dancer Rudolf Nureyev, Karen gained international recognition, performing in prestigious theaters around the world, including the Bolshoi Theatre, Le Ballet National de Marseilles, London Festival Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Hamburg Ballet, Vienna State Opera Ballet, and Eliot Feld Ballet.

In 1973, Karen Kain won the second prize at the Second International Ballet Competition in Moscow, dancing alongside Friedrich Augustin. Additionally, she received numerous accolades throughout her career, including being appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1976 and a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1991, recognizing her outstanding contributions to Canada and humanity. Karen also holds honorary degrees from the University of Toronto, York University, McMaster University, Trent University, and the University of British Columbia.

Later Career and Achievements

In May 1998, the French government named Karen Kain an Officer of the Order of Arts and Literature. She has received other notable awards, such as the National Arts Centre Award, Performing Arts Award, and the Barbara Hamilton Memorial Award from the city of Toronto in 2007.

After a break from performing in the late 1970s, Karen returned to the National Ballet of Canada in 1980. She continued to grace stages across her home country for fifteen years before retiring in 1997. In 1998, she rejoined the National Ballet of Canada, this time as an administrator. She also serves as the director of the Dancer Transition Resource Centre.

In 2004, Karen was appointed the Chair of the Canada Council for the Arts. However, she stepped down from this position in 2008 to focus on her role in managing the National Ballet of Canada.

Personal Life

In 1983, Karen Kain married actor and producer Ross Petty, and they have been in a successful marriage for over twenty years. In 2008, Karen opened the Karen Kain School of the Arts in her hometown, Hamilton, in honor of her remarkable career and contribution to the arts.
