Biography of Marcelo Gomes
Marcelo Gomes is a Brazilian dancer who has achieved great success in the world of ballet. He began his dance training at the age of five at the Ballet School of Rio de Janeiro under the guidance of Helena Lobato and Dalal Oscar.
Early Career and International Recognition
In 1993, Gomes won the "Discovery" Prize at the Dance Festival in Joinville, Brazil. This victory opened doors for him to pursue further training in the United States. He joined the Harid Conservatory in Florida and later trained with the Boston Ballet, Houston Ballet, and Cuban Ballet, where he studied under the guidance of Alicia Alonso.
Gomes' talent and dedication were quickly recognized, and he received the second prize from the National Society of Arts and Literature in 1994. In 1996, he became the recipient of the Hope Prize at the Lausanne Ballet Competition. This achievement led him to spend a year at the Ballet School of the Paris Opera.
Success as a Principal Dancer
In 1997, Gomes joined the corps de ballet of American Ballet Theatre (ABT) and swiftly rose through the ranks. He became a soloist in 2000 and a principal dancer in 2002. Throughout his career, Gomes has performed leading roles in numerous classical ballets, including Romeo in "Romeo and Juliet," Albert in "Giselle," Siegfried, Benno, and Rothbart in "Swan Lake," Solor in "La Bayadère," Desire in "Sleeping Beauty," Franz in "Coppélia," Espada and Basil in "Don Quixote," Prince in "Cinderella," Onegin and Gremin in "Onegin," Conrad, Ali, and Birbanto in "Le Corsaire," Cavalier in "The Nutcracker," Moor in "Othello," Jean de Brienne and Abderrahman in "Raymonda," Lescaut and Des Grieux in "Manon Lescaut."
Collaborations and Worldwide Performances
Gomes has had the privilege of working with renowned choreographers such as George Balanchine, Mikhail Fokine, Antony Tudor, Jerome Robbins, Frederick Ashton, John Cranko, Martha Graham, Twyla Tharp, William Forsythe, Paul Taylor, Mark Morris, Jiri Kylian, Lar Lubovitch, James Kudelka, Nacho Duato, Stanton Welch, Jorma Elo, and Christopher Wheeldon.
His performances have taken him all over the world, touring with the ABT company and participating in international festivals, including the World Ballet Festival in Japan. Gomes has also been a guest soloist with the Dutch National Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, Houston Ballet, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, and Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro.
In 2007, Gomes accompanied Alessandra Ferri on her farewell tour in Japan and Italy. He continues to captivate audiences with his exceptional talent and artistry, showcasing his performances on stages around the globe.
