Early Life and Career
Karim Ansarifard, an Iranian footballer of Azerbaijani descent, was born in Ardabil, Iran. From a young age, he exhibited exceptional talent for the sport, honing his skills through participation in the Inter Campus program, an international project developed by FC Internazionale Milano to promote football in underprivileged communities worldwide.
Breakthrough with Saipa
Ansarifard's career took a significant turn in 2006 when he joined Saipa's academy and reserve team. After graduating to the senior squad in 2007, he swiftly established himself as a pivotal player, showcasing his versatility as both a central forward and right midfielder. His impressive performances during the 2009/10 season, in which he netted 13 goals, garnered attention from European clubs, including Celtic and Borussia Dortmund.
Domestic Dominance and National Team Debut
Despite interest from abroad, Ansarifard remained committed to his domestic clubs, signing a two-year contract extension with Saipa in 2011. Over the following three seasons, he continued to excel, winning the Golden Boot award twice and establishing himself as Saipa's all-time top scorer. During this period, he also made his international debut for Iran in 2009, scoring the winning goal against Iceland in his first appearance.
Transfer to Persepolis and International Success
In 2012, Ansarifard made a high-profile move to Persepolis, one of Iran's most prestigious clubs. Despite a strong start, his time at Persepolis was marred by conflict with the club's management, leading to his departure in 2013. Following a successful loan spell at Tractor Sazi, where he won the Iranian Cup in 2014, Ansarifard returned to Persepolis but declined to sign a new contract.
Departure from Persepolis and World Cup Participation
In 2013, Ansarifard's relationship with Persepolis deteriorated further, culminating in a training ground altercation with his former mentor, Ali Daei, who was now the club's manager. Consequently, he was demoted to the reserve team before being sent on loan to Tractor Sazi. After helping the club win the Iranian Cup, he returned to Persepolis but expressed his desire to leave at the end of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
International Career Highlights
Ansarifard's international career has been marked by notable achievements. At the 2011 Asian Cup, he became the youngest Iranian player to score at the continental tournament. He also played a pivotal role in Iran's qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, providing the assist for the winning goal in a crucial away match against Uzbekistan. Most recently, he scored three goals in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup qualification tournament, earning him a place in Iran's final squad for the finals in Australia.
