Biography of Karim Massimov
Karim Kazhimkanovich Massimov was born in 1965 in Zelinograd, Kazakh SSR. He began his career in the 1990s as the chairman of several major banks, including Almaty Trade and Financial Bank, Turan Bank, and People's Savings Bank of Kazakhstan. He holds a doctorate in economics.
Early Life and Education
Massimov's father, Kazhimkan Kassymovich Massimov, was a director at a brick factory and later worked for the Ministry of Supplies of the Kazakh SSR. Massimov attended the Republican Physics and Mathematics Boarding School in Alma-Ata, graduating in 1982. He then enrolled at the Technical Faculty of the Higher School of the KGB of the USSR. After a brief stint in the military, he transferred to the Faculty of Economics and Law at the Patrice Lumumba Friendship University (now the Russian Friendship University) in Moscow. He also studied Chinese language and international law in China.
Early Career
Upon returning to Kazakhstan, Massimov worked in various government and commercial organizations involved in trade with China and Hong Kong. He held positions such as deputy director of Kazakhprigrantrorg, senior economist at the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations, deputy director of Kazakhintorg in Urumqi, and deputy director of the External Economic Activities of TO "Accept." He also served as the managing director of the Kazakh Trading House in Hong Kong.
Banking Career and Education
In 1995, Massimov entered the banking sector, serving as the chairman of Almaty Trade and Financial Bank, Turan Bank, and People's Savings Bank of Kazakhstan. During this time, he continued his education, earning degrees in finance and credit from the Kazakh Academy of Management. He also completed a doctoral dissertation on the problems of industrial development in Kazakhstan.
Political Career
In 2000, Massimov was appointed Minister of Transport and Communications of Kazakhstan. He went on to become the Deputy Prime Minister in 2001 and served as the Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Budget Planning from 2006 to 2007. In January 2007, he was appointed as the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan. Throughout his political career, Massimov was known for his close ties to President Nursultan Nazarbayev and his dedication to promoting information technology and e-government initiatives in the country.
Later Career
In September 2012, Massimov stepped down as Prime Minister and was appointed as the Head of the Presidential Administration of Kazakhstan. He continued to play a significant role in the country's political landscape, and his long tenure as Prime Minister made him one of the most influential figures in Kazakhstan's government.
Personal Life
Massimov is married to Dilara Azatovna Massimova, and they have three children together. Their daughter Tamila received education in Singapore, where the family also owns a multi-million dollar apartment. Massimov is known for his interest in martial arts and serves as the President of the Kazakhstan Thai Boxing Federation and the Honorary President of the Kazakhstan Taekwondo Federation. He is also a fan of Chinese and Japanese poetry.
Massimov has been honored with several awards, including the Order of Kurmet and the Order of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan - Leader of the Nation.
