Biography of Karine Danielyan

Karine Surenovna Danielyan (Armenian: Կարինե Սուրենի Դանիելյան) was an Armenian political, social, and state figure. She was born on June 9, 1947, in Yerevan. Danielyan has made significant contributions in the fields of politics, society, and state affairs in Armenia.

Education and Early Career

From 1953 to 1964, Danielyan attended and graduated from secondary school with distinction. She then pursued a degree in Biophysics at Yerevan State University, specializing in the field from 1964 to 1970. After completing her studies, she conducted scientific research in the field of biochemistry/biophysics from 1971 to 1974 and successfully defended her doctoral dissertation in 1975. In 1974, she began working as a junior research fellow at the National Academy of Sciences.

Environmental Advocacy

In 1976, Danielyan started teaching the course "Environmental Protection" at the Biological Faculty of Yerevan State University. In 1980, she transitioned to the Scientific Council on Biosphere Issues under the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences, serving as a scientific secretary. In 1985, she was invited to work at the Scientific and Technical Information Institute under the Government of the Armenian SSR, where she led the department responsible for providing scientific and technical information to the country's leadership.

From 1988, Danielyan became one of the founders of the national environmental movement in Armenia. She also actively participated in the women's movement as a member of the Republican Council of Women and the League of Armenian Women. In 1990, she was elected as the First Deputy Mayor of Yerevan, responsible for the environmental and healthcare complex. From 1991 to 1994, she served as the Minister of Nature Protection of Armenia.

Later Career and International Cooperation

After leaving the government position, Danielyan returned to teaching at Yerevan State University in 1994. She began collaborating with various international organizations such as UNDP, UNEP, USAID, EU, WB, OSCE, SIDA, REC, and others as a national expert in ecology and sustainable development. In January 1996, she established the NGO "Association for Sustainable Human Development," which she continues to lead to this day.

Since 1997, Danielyan has represented Armenia on the international stage as the head of the NGO. She has authored 260 scientific articles, co-authored and edited over 30 books, including national reports on ecology and sustainable development. Additionally, she holds the positions of Professor at Yerevan State University and an academician of the International Academy of Ecology.

Danielyan is actively involved in various councils and committees related to environmental issues in Armenia. She is a member of the Coordination Council of the Government of Armenia on PRSP, the Board of Trustees of the Forest Restoration Fund under the Prime Minister of Armenia, the Council on Preventing Illegal Logging under the Prime Minister of Armenia, the Council on Lake Sevan under the Minister of Nature Protection, the Urban Planning Council under the Mayor of Yerevan, the Expert Council of the OSCE's Aarhus Center and the Ministry of Nature Protection of Armenia, and an independent expert of the Armenian parliament. She also serves as a national expert for UNDP and is a member of the Expert Council under the Armenian Ombudsman.
