James Roosevelt: A Legacy of Politics, War, and Business
Early Life and EducationBorn in New York City to former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, James Roosevelt developed a passion for athletics and public service during his time at Groton School in Massachusetts. In 1926, he enrolled at Harvard University, where he studied law. However, his success in the insurance business led him to abandon his legal studies.
Business Success
In 1932, Roosevelt founded Roosevelt and Sargent, a successful insurance agency that accumulated a substantial fortune. He left the agency in 1937, but maintained ownership interests.
Political Involvement
Roosevelt's involvement in politics began at a young age. He assisted his father at the Democratic National Convention in 1924 and supported Al Smith's presidential campaign in 1928. In 1932, he became a vocal advocate for his father's presidential bid, delivering over 200 speeches.
White House Secretary
After the death of the presidential secretary in 1936, Roosevelt assumed many of his responsibilities, formally becoming secretary to the President in 1937. He oversaw 18 federal agencies and became one of his father's most trusted advisors.
Accusations and Resignation
In 1938, Roosevelt was accused of using his position for personal gain, but he successfully defended himself by releasing his company's tax records. He resigned from the White House later that year.
Hollywood and Military Service
Roosevelt moved to Hollywood and worked for film producer Samuel Goldwyn. In 1939, he founded Globe Productions, a short-film company. He returned to military service in 1944.
Military Career
Roosevelt served in the Marine Corps during World War II, including a stint as a military attaché in the Middle East. He assisted the British in several key campaigns. In 1941, he joined the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the forerunner of the CIA. He retired from the military in 1959 as a brigadier general.
Post-War Activities
Roosevelt remained active in politics and wrote several books about his father. He passed away in 1991 due to complications from a heart attack and Parkinson's disease.
