Archduke Karl Ferdinand of Austria
Early Life and Military CareerKarl Ferdinand was an Archduke of Austria from the Teschen branch of the Habsburg dynasty. He was born on July 29, 1818, as the second son of Archduke Charles, Duke of Teschen, and Henrietta of Nassau-Weilburg.
Karl Ferdinand embarked on his military career in the 57th Infantry Regiment in Brno. He later commanded a brigade in Italy and fought against rebels in Prague in 1848. In 1859, he participated in battles in Moravia and Silesia before returning to Brno in 1860.
Marriage and Family
On April 18, 1854, Karl Ferdinand married Archduchess Elisabeth Franziska, the daughter of Archduke Joseph and the widow of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Este, Duke of Modena. They had five children:

Later Years
Karl Ferdinand was promoted to General of Cavalry on November 7, 1860. He retired from active service in 1872. Upon his death in 1874, his children were adopted by his brother, Field Marshal Archduke Albrecht.
