Early Life and Military Education
Lieutenant General Marat Mamazhanov was born on April 29, 1952, in Temir, Kazakhstan. In 1975, he graduated from the Alma-Ata Higher Combined Arms Command School named after I. V. Konev.
Military Career in the Soviet Army
Mamazhanov served as a platoon and company commander in the Soviet Army's Group of Forces in Germany. He also held the position of chief of staff of a motorized rifle battalion and battalion commander in the Siberian Military District. In 1987, he graduated from the M. V. Frunze Military Academy.
Service in the Internal Troops of Kazakhstan
Following his studies, Mamazhanov returned to Kazakhstan to serve as deputy commander of an operational brigade for the Internal Troops within the Soviet Ministry of Internal Affairs. In 1990, he became commander of the Training Regiment of the Internal Troops of Kazakhstan.
Political and Military Roles in Kazakhstan
After Kazakhstan's independence, Mamazhanov was elected to the Supreme Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan in 1991. In 1992, he became commander of the operational brigade of the Internal Troops of Kazakhstan. Later that year, he was elected chairman of the Supreme Council's Committee on National Security and Defense.
Leadership of Internal Military Forces
From 1994 to 2001, Mamazhanov commanded the Internal Troops of Kazakhstan. During this time, he oversaw the reorganization of the Internal Forces and became the first deputy commander of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Command of Republican Guard and Internal Troops
In 2001, Mamazhanov was appointed commander of the Republican Guard of Kazakhstan. The following year, he became commander of the Internal Troops and chairman of the Committee of Internal Troops of Kazakhstan.
Regional Command and Emergency Response
In 2003, Mamazhanov took command of the "Vostok" Regional Command. In 2004, he was named vice-minister for emergency situations of Kazakhstan.
Deputy Minister of Defense
In April 2006, Mamazhanov was appointed deputy minister of defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan. He also graduated with distinction from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in 2008.
Head of National Defense University
On July 17, 2009, Mamazhanov was appointed head of the National Defense University and relieved of his duties as deputy minister of defense. However, in May 2010, he was released from his position at the university.
