Karl von Habsburg-Lothringen: The Current Head of the House of Habsburg
Karl von Habsburg-Lothringen, the son of Otto von Habsburg and Princess Regina of Saxe-Meiningen, is the current head of the House of Habsburg. His grandfather was the last Austrian Emperor, Karl I. Karl von Habsburg-Lothringen has been president of the Austrian branch of the Paneuropean Union since 1986.
Educational and Professional Background
After studying law for 12 years, Karl von Habsburg-Lothringen hosted the game show "Who is Who" on ORF public television from 1992 to 1993. In October 1996, he was elected to the European Parliament from the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP). On January 19, 2002, he was appointed Director General of the UNPO (Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization) by the UNPO Steering Committee. Since December 7, 2008, he has served as president of the Association of National Committees of the Blue Shield.
Leadership of the House of Habsburg
On January 1, 2007, his father, Otto von Habsburg, relinquished his position as head of the Habsburg dynasty to Karl von Habsburg-Lothringen, who became known by the title of Archduke. Karl is also the formal pretender to the thrones of several defunct kingdoms, including Hungary, Bohemia, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Galicia-Volhynia, Illyria, and even the Kingdom of Jerusalem, lost by the Crusaders in 1291.
Personal Life
Karl von Habsburg-Lothringen has resided in Salzburg, Austria, since 1981. He lives in Casa Austria (formerly Villa Swoboda) in the town of Anif. On January 31, 1993, he married Baroness Francesca Thyssen, the only daughter of Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen, a European industrialist, and his third wife, Fiona Campbell-Walter. Karl and Francesca have three children:
