Karl Kling: A German Racing Legend
Born in Stuttgart, Germany, Karl Kling first developed an interest in motorsports before World War II. However, it was not until the age of 37 in 1947 that he began his professional career. His breakthrough victory came at the Hockenheimring, driving a BMW.
Early Successes
In 1948 and 1949, Kling emerged as the German Sports Car Champion (2-liter class) behind the wheel of a Veritas. He continued his impressive form in 1950, competing in Formula 2 with Veritas and earning three victories.
Joining Mercedes
Kling's talents caught the attention of the legendary Mercedes team, which he joined in 1951. He secured a second-place finish in the South American Eva Peron Cup that year. In 1952, he raced the Mercedes 300 SL, triumphing at the Carrera Panamericana and Prix de Berne. He also placed second at the Mille Miglia.
Alfa Romeo Interlude
In 1953, Kling briefly switched to Alfa Romeo but returned to Mercedes the following year. While overshadowed by his illustrious teammate, Juan-Manuel Fangio, he achieved a notable victory at the Berlin Grand Prix. In the 1954 Formula 1 season, he finished fifth in the championship and earned a podium in France.
Final Years
The arrival of Stirling Moss at Mercedes in 1955 diminished Kling's success in Formula 1, and he placed 11th in the championship that year. However, he partnered with Fangio to secure second place in both the Tourist Trophy and Targa Florio. After the season, Karl Kling retired from motorsports.
