Karl Koller, one of the greatest footballers in Austrian history, left an indelible mark on the sport.
Early Life and Club Debut
Koller was born in Hölles and spent his childhood in Blumau-Neurißhof. At the age of 20, he joined the renowned Vienna club "First," impressing the coach, Hone Vert.
National Team Triumphs
After his club debut, Koller made his international debut for Austria against Belgium in 1952. He participated in the 1954 World Cup, where Austria finished third. In 1955, he claimed his first Austrian Championship, followed by silver medals in 1957.
World Cup Appearances
Koller competed in his second World Cup in 1958. However, Austria faced a formidable group with England, Brazil, and the USSR, ultimately failing to advance beyond the group stage. He played a total of eight World Cup matches, scoring a goal against England.
Club Success and Retirement
In 1961, "First" reached the Austrian Cup final and secured silver in the Austrian Championship. Koller retired from playing in 1965.
Post-Retirement Life and Legacy
After retiring, Koller ventured into the hospitality industry, owning a hotel in Blumau-Neurißhof. Sadly, he passed away at the age of 79 after battling Alzheimer's disease. He was laid to rest in the Blumau-Neurißhof cemetery.
International Acclaim
Karl Koller's exceptional talent earned him the recognition of the IFFHS, who ranked him 70th among the best European players of the 20th century. He remains an iconic figure in Austrian football and is celebrated for his contribution to the sport.
