Mauro Tassotti: Italian Footballer and Assistant Coach of AC Milan
Mauro Tassotti, an Italian former footballer and defender, is widely known for his tough and sometimes rough style of play, which earned him numerous yellow and red cards throughout his career. He currently serves as the assistant coach of AC Milan.

Early Career and Move to AC Milan
Tassotti began his career at Lazio, making his debut for the club on November 5, 1978, in a match against Ascoli. After spending two seasons at Lazio, he moved to AC Milan, which was then playing in Serie B due to a scandal in Italian football. Tassotti made his debut for Milan on August 24, 1980, in a match against Catania. Despite a challenging start for Milan in the early 1980s, the arrival of coach Arrigo Sacchi changed the team's dynamics, including their defense, which adopted a zonal marking system. Tassotti became one of the most respected and vital players in the team, even serving as vice-captain. Under Sacchi and later Fabio Capello, AC Milan became one of the best teams of that era, winning multiple Serie A titles, Italian Super Cups, UEFA Champions League trophies, UEFA Super Cups, and Intercontinental Cups.
International Career
Tassotti made his debut for the Italian national team on October 14, 1992, in a match against Switzerland. In 1994, Tassotti was selected to represent Italy in the FIFA World Cup. The head coach, Arrigo Sacchi, who previously coached Tassotti at Milan, built the national team's defense around the defensive line of Milan. However, in the first match against Ireland, Italy suffered a defeat, and several players, including Tassotti, were benched. Tassotti returned to the starting lineup in the quarterfinals but became infamous for an elbow to the face of Luis Enrique during the match against Spain. Although Tassotti was not sent off by the referee, he received a lengthy eight-match ban after the game. This match against Spain marked Tassotti's last appearance for the Italian national team. In November 1994, Tassotti publicly apologized to Luis Enrique in an interview with the "Dribbling" newspaper.
Retirement and Coaching Career
At the age of 37, Tassotti decided to retire from professional football. His final match was played on July 1, 1997, against Cagliari, where he played as a central midfielder. Throughout his career, Tassotti played a total of 404 games in Serie A and 65 matches in Serie B, with 428 of them being for AC Milan. He scored 10 goals, including 8 in Serie A, 1 in the Coppa Italia, and 1 in the UEFA Champions League, which was his last goal before retiring.
Following his retirement, Tassotti remained at AC Milan and became the coach of the club's youth team, leading them to two Torno di Viareggio titles in 1999 and 2001. In 2001, Tassotti became the assistant coach to interim head coach Cesare Maldini and later continued in the same role under Carlo Ancelotti.
Personal Life and Honors
Mauro Tassotti is married to Antonella, and they tied the knot on May 31, 1986. The couple has two children, a son named Nicola and a daughter named Lucrezia. Tassotti credits Nils Liedholm as his footballing father figure, instilling in him confidence and a winning mentality, and Arrigo Sacchi for emphasizing not only physicality but also the moral background of his players, which was a new phenomenon in Italian football.
During his career, Tassotti achieved numerous honors, including winning the Serie A title in 1988, 1992, 1993, 1994, and 1996. He also clinched the Italian Super Cup in 1988, 1992, 1993, and 1994. Additionally, Tassotti was part of the AC Milan squad that won the UEFA Champions League in 1989, 1990, and 1994, and the UEFA Super Cup in 1989, 1990, and 1994.
