Early Life and Education

Johann Friedrich Karl Jerusalem was born in Osnabrück, Germany, to Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Jerusalem. His father's tragic suicide due to unrequited love became the basis for the protagonist's fate in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's novel "The Sorrows of Young Werther."

Jerusalem studied law at the University of Leipzig, where he forged a friendship with Goethe. Subsequently, he joined the diplomatic service of the Duchy of Brunswick.

Legal Career and Conflicts

At the Imperial Chamber Court in Wetzlar, Jerusalem immersed himself in legal practice. However, his encounter with Goethe rekindled their connection. As a man of bourgeois origins, Jerusalem faced discrimination from the nobility and clashed with his superiors. His legal career brought him little satisfaction.

Unrequited Love and Despair

Unrequited love for Elisabeth Herd, who married another man, dealt Jerusalem a crushing blow. Consumed by melancholy, he retreated to his apartment in Wetzlar. On October 29, 1772, he shot himself and succumbed to his wounds the following day.
