Early Life and Military Service

Born into a legal family in Darmstadt, Germany, Karl Wolff served in World War I, earning the Iron Cross 2nd and 1st class for his bravery. After the war, he pursued careers in banking and commerce.

SS and Nazi Party Membership

In 1931, Wolff joined the Nazi Party and SS, rising through the ranks to become an SS-Obergruppenführer (Senior Group Leader) and SS General Colonel. As a figure of Nordic purity and with aristocratic connections, he became a prime example of the "Aryan ideal."

Service with Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler

From 1936 to 1943, Wolff served as chief of staff to Heinrich Himmler, Reichsführer-SS. He played a pivotal role in the organization's financing, establishing the "Circle of Friends of the SS" to secure funds. Wolff also contributed to the development of SS ideology and symbolism.

Liaison to Hitler and Special Assignments

From 1939, Wolff served as a liaison between Himmler and Hitler. He accompanied Himmler on numerous trips, including visits to concentration camps. In 1943, amidst strained relations with Himmler, Wolff became Supreme SS and Police Leader in Italy.

Negotiations and Capitulation in Italy

In the final months of World War II, Wolff engaged in negotiations with the Western Allies, seeking to surrender German forces in Italy. Despite Hitler's prohibition, he offered to facilitate a ceasefire on the Western Front through the mediation of Pope Pius XII.

Post-War Imprisonment and Trial

After the war, Wolff was arrested and sentenced to 15 years in prison in 1964 for his role in the deportations of Jews to the Treblinka concentration camp. However, he was released in 1971 due to health reasons and died in 1984.
