Biography of Karol Adamiecki

Karol Adamiecki was a Polish economist, engineer, and researcher in control theory. He was born on March 18, 1866, in Dabrowa Gornicza, a major industrial center in southern Poland. He attended a unique secondary school in Lodz, which differed from the classical gymnasiums of the Russian Empire at that time. Instead of focusing on Latin and Greek languages, the Higher Technical School emphasized mathematics and technical disciplines.

After completing his education at the Saint Petersburg Institute of Technology, Karol Adamiecki returned to Dabrowa Gornicza. He was offered a position at a steel production plant, initially in the technical department and later as an assistant to the plant manager. During management meetings, high production costs were discussed as a significant problem, with British advisors attributing it to the laziness of Polish workers. Disagreeing with this conclusion, Adamiecki secretly observed the work brigades and based on his observations, he created a new schedule and introduced structural improvements that significantly reduced the cost of the process. This experience sparked Adamiecki's interest in management and labor organization.

In 1898, Adamiecki became the head of the rolling department at the Hartman Steelworks in Luhansk, where he simplified the plate rolling process, thus reducing production costs. In 1901, he took on the role of technical director at a plant in present-day Dnipropetrovsk, where he made further improvements to the manufacturing process and conducted research on factors negatively impacting production organization. Until 1911, Adamiecki held various leadership positions in metallurgical and ceramic production plants in Ostrowiec and Warsaw.

In 1919, Karol Adamiecki became a professor at the Warsaw Polytechnic University. He founded and served as the first director of the Institute of Scientific Organization in Warsaw from 1925 to 1933. He also served as the vice president of the European Association of Scientific Management. Adamiecki passed away on May 16, 1933, at the age of 67 in Warsaw.

In honor of his contributions, the State College of Economic Administration in Katowice was named the Karol Adamiecki State College of Economic Administration in 1972. In 1974, it was further transformed into the Karol Adamiecki University of Economics.
