Early Life and Military Career
Károly Beregfy was born on February 13, 1888, in Csrvenka, Vojvodina. During World War I, he fought and was severely wounded. From 1939 to 1941, he commanded the Royal Military Academy.
World War II Service
From 1941 to 1944, Beregfy served as the commander of the VI Corps and later as the commander of the Third Army. However, he was dismissed and removed from his post in April 1944 due to the defeat of his troops by the Red Army.
Nazi Collaboration and Minister of Defense
After the German occupation of Hungary and Szálasi's coup, Beregfy was appointed Minister of Defense on October 16, 1944. As Minister of Defense, he also served as chief of staff with the rank of Lieutenant General.
Role in the Holocaust
Beregfy played an active role in the persecution of Jews in Hungary. On October 21, he signed a decree forcing all Jewish men aged 16-60 and women aged 16-40 into forced labor.
Capture, Trial, and Execution
On April 30, 1945, Beregfy was captured by American forces and handed over to the new Hungarian government. He was tried by the People's Tribunal for crimes against humanity and was hanged on March 12, 1946, along with Ferenc Szálasi and József Gera.
