Early Life and Education

Majaliwa was born on December 22, 1961. He graduated from Kigonsera Secondary School in 1983. He then worked as a teacher for sixteen years. In 1993, he obtained a Teacher's Diploma from Mtwara Teacher's College. In 1998, he earned a Bachelor of Education from the University of Dar es Salaam.

Trade Union Involvement

In 1999, Majaliwa joined the trade union movement. He served as a District and Regional Secretary of the Tanzania Teachers' Union until 2006.

Political Career

Election to Parliament

Majaliwa was first elected to parliament under Chama Cha Mapinduzi in the 2010 general election. He served as Deputy Minister of State responsible for Regional Administration and Local Government from 2010 to 2015.

Re-election and Premiership

In the 2015 general election, Majaliwa was re-elected in Ruangwa, defeating Omar Makota of the United Civic Front by 31,281 votes to 25,536. Following the inauguration of John Magufuli as President in 2015, Majaliwa was appointed Prime Minister on November 20, 2015. His appointment came as a surprise to many, as he was a relative newcomer to electoral politics. His selection was attributed to his humility, honesty, and work ethic, as well as regional considerations, as the new Prime Minister was expected to come from the southern regions, from which Majaliwa hails. His experience as an educator and as a deputy minister was also cited. The opposition criticized the appointment of Majaliwa, citing his lack of relevant experience.
