Kat Dennings, born Katherine Litwack on June 13, 1986, is an American actress. She was born and raised in Bryn Mawr, near Philadelphia. Her mother, Ellie Judith Litwack, was a poet and speech therapist, while her father, Gerald Jay Litwack, was a molecular pharmacologist and a former assistant dean at Thomas Jefferson University. Kat is the youngest of five children and comes from a Jewish background.

Kat began her acting career at a young age, starring in various commercials, including one for potato chips. She received her education through homeschooling and completed her school course at the age of fourteen. In 2002, Kat and her family moved to Los Angeles to pursue her passion for acting professionally. Initially, her parents were not supportive of her decision to become an actress as they did not consider it a serious career.

In 2000, Kat made her breakthrough on the cable channel HBO in the series "Sex and the City." She then appeared in the short-lived series "Raising Dad," followed by roles in TV shows like "Without a Trace" and "Less Than Perfect." In 2004, she starred in the film "Raise Your Voice" alongside Hilary Duff, and in 2005, she landed a role in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin." She also made guest appearances in "ER" in 2005 and 2006, and starred in "Big Momma's House 2" with Martin Lawrence.

In 2008, Kat played the lead role in the film "Charlie Bartlett," portraying a wealthy teenager who poses as a psychiatrist in a new school. This role earned her critical acclaim and solidified her status in the industry. She went on to appear in "The House Bunny" with Anna Faris and "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" with Michael Cera. Her performance in the latter earned her a nomination for the Satellite Award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.
