Biography of Kateryna Bondarenko
Kateryna Volodymyrivna Bondarenko, born on August 8, 1986, in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, Soviet Union, is a Ukrainian tennis player. She plays right-handed with a two-handed backhand. Bondarenko comes from a family of professional tennis players, with her older sisters Valeria and Alona also being tennis professionals. She was introduced to tennis by her father when she was 4 years old.
Professional Career
Bondarenko turned professional in 2000. As of January 2011, she was ranked 89th in the world in singles and 104th in doubles by the WTA. Her career highlights include reaching the 29th and 9th spots in the singles and doubles rankings, respectively.
Bondarenko's greatest success in singles came at the Rogers Cup in Toronto, Canada, where she defeated the third-seeded Venus Williams. She has also defeated Ana Ivanovic in professional matches on two occasions, reached the final of the prestigious Wimbledon in 2004, and emerged as the winner in a match against Elena Dementieva at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in 2009.
In doubles, Bondarenko won the Australian Open in 2008 with her sister Alona. They faced Victoria Azarenka and Shahar Pe'er in a three-set match in the final.

Injury and SetbacksBondarenko faced setbacks due to injuries during her career. She suffered a left thigh muscle strain, which caused her to lose in the doubles semifinals with her sister at a tournament. She also missed the tournament in Doha due to the same injury.
At the Beijing Olympics, Bondarenko represented Ukraine but lost to Elena Dementieva. In doubles, she and her sister finished fourth. In the 2009 season, Bondarenko had early exits in the Brisbane International and the Moorilla Hobart International tournaments. She reached the third round of the Australian Open, where she lost to Jie Zheng.
Bondarenko's performances in 2009 included reaching the second round of the Warsaw Open, losing to Daniela Hantuchova, and facing Venus Williams at Wimbledon. She reached the quarterfinals of the ECM Prague Open, where she was defeated by Francesca Schiavone, and defeated Venus Williams again at the Rogers Cup before losing to Radwanska in the next round. She reached the quarterfinals of the US Open, becoming the first Ukrainian female tennis player to achieve this in a Grand Slam tournament.
In the 2010 season, Bondarenko was unable to participate in the Indian Wells and Miami tournaments. She reached the second round of the French Open, where she lost to Aleksandra Wozniak. In doubles, she and her sister were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik.
