Early Life and Education
Catherine Jefferts Schori was born in Pensacola, Florida, in 1942. Though baptized Catholic, she became an Episcopalian at the age of eight. She attended high school in New Jersey and pursued a Bachelor's degree in Biology at Stanford University. After graduating in 1974, she earned her Master's and Ph.D. in Oceanography from the University of Oregon in 1977 and 1983, respectively.
Religious Vocation
In 1994, Schori received her Master of Divinity degree and was ordained as a priest. In 2001, she was elected and consecrated as the Bishop of Nevada. She later received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from General Theological Seminary.
Episcopal Leadership
From 2001 to 2006, Schori served as the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Nevada. In 2006, she was elected as the 26th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the United States, becoming the first female primate of a church in the Anglican Communion.
Advocacy and Controversy
Schori is a vocal supporter of same-sex relationships and identifies as a lesbian herself. Her stance has drawn controversy within the Anglican Communion, particularly among conservative factions.
Personal Life
In 1979, Schori married Richard Schori, a professor at the University of Oregon. Their daughter, Catherine, is a captain and pilot in the United States Air Force.
