Early Life and Education

Kathleen Elizabeth Fell was born on January 11, 1921, in West London, England, to a railway clerk. Before making her film debut in 1938, she trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

Marriage and Move to the US

In 1943, she married USAAF pilot Lieutenant John Daniel Bowen and moved to the United States. However, she was soon persuaded by film director Michael Powell to return to Britain.

Career Breakthrough

Upon her return, Byron starred in several successful films, including "A Matter of Life and Death" (1946), "Black Narcissus" (1947), and "The Small Back Room" (1949). During the filming of "Black Narcissus," she began an affair with Powell, leading to her divorce in 1950.

Hollywood and Return to Britain

After the success of "Black Narcissus," Byron was invited to Hollywood, where she appeared in "The Baby" (1953) as Anne Seymour. However, her role went largely unnoticed, and she returned to Britain.

Later Career

In the following years, she starred primarily in B-movies and did extensive television work. She had a few notable roles in successful films, including "The Elephant Man" (1980), "Emma" (1996), "Les Misérables" (1998), and "Saving Private Ryan" (1998). Her final role was in the television film "Perfect Strangers" in 2001.

Personal Life

Byron married British writer and journalist Alaric Jacob in 1953, and they remained married until his death in 1995.

Death

Kathleen Byron passed away in Northwood, North London, on January 18, 2009.
