Early Life and Education
Kathleen Troia McFarland was born in 1943 as the eldest of four children to August Joseph Troia, a railroad dispatcher, and Edith Fuller Troia. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from George Washington University, as well as Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Oxford University. She also pursued a doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology but did not complete her dissertation.

Government and Military Service
National Security Council (1970-1976)During the Nixon administration, McFarland served as an assistant to Henry Kissinger on the National Security Council.

Reagan Administration (1982-1985)
Under Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger, McFarland worked as a speechwriter and later as Deputy Assistant for Public Affairs. In 1984, she drafted a key speech outlining the Reagan administration's military policy principles.

Political Career
Senate Run (2006)In 2006, McFarland unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat in New York, which was held by Hillary Clinton.

Fox News Commentator (2006-2016)
Throughout her career, McFarland became a frequent political analyst on Fox News and hosted the show "DefCon3."
