Mike Honda: A Force in American Politics

Early Life and Education

Mike Honda is an American politician and a member of the Democratic Party. Born into an American family of Japanese descent, Honda spent his early childhood in a Japanese internment camp in Colorado. After graduating from San Jose High Academy with a bachelor's degree in biology and Spanish in 1968, he went on to earn a master's degree in education in 1974.

Military Service and Peace Corps

In 1965-1967, Honda served in the Peace Corps in El Salvador. This experience deepened his commitment to peace and justice, which has shaped his political career ever since.

Congressional Career

Honda has represented California's 17th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2001. He is a member of the House Appropriations Committee and is known for his strong opposition to the Cuban blockade.

Advocacy for the Comfort Women

In 2007, Honda introduced a resolution demanding that Japan formally acknowledge, apologize for, and accept historical responsibility for the "comfort women" system. This resolution passed the House of Representatives by unanimous consent, a testament to Honda's tireless efforts to seek justice for the victims of this horrific crime.
