Kacia Chikovani: Prince of Lechkhumi and Regent of Odishi

Early Life and Rise to Power

Kacia Chikovani (d. 1683) was a nobleman from the village of Gordi in Svaneti. Despite his humble origins, he rose to prominence through the patronage of his brother, Bishop Chkondidzeli of Chkondidi. His military prowess and cunning earned him the respect of the kings of Georgia, particularly Levan Dadiani of Odishi (Mingrelia). Dadiani granted Chikovani the title of Prince of Salipartiano and made him his trusted confidant.

Regent of Odishi

Upon the death of Levan III Dadiani in 1657, Odishi faced a succession crisis as the late king left no male heirs. Kacia Chikovani, capitalizing on his influence and popularity, assumed the regency of the principality. His rule was marked by both ruthlessness and pragmatism, as he eliminated rival nobles and established stability.

Marriages and Children

Chikovani had multiple wives, including:
Princess Tamara Chijavadze (divorced)
Khvaramze Charkviani
A daughter of Rostom, Eristavi of Racha
Khvaramze Lordkipanidze
Mzehatun, illegitimate daughter of Levan III Dadiani
His children, all likely born from his first marriage:

Prince Giorgi Chikovani (1682-1704), Prince of Lechkhumi
Legacy

Kacia Chikovani's regency played a significant role in shaping the political landscape of western Georgia. His descendants, the Chikovani princes, continued to play a prominent role in the affairs of their region for centuries after his death.
