Kausea Natano: The 13th Prime Minister of Tuvalu
Born on September 19, 2019, Kausea Natano is a Tuvaluan politician and the 13th Prime Minister of Tuvalu. As an independent member of parliament, he has held numerous key roles, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Communications.
Political Career
Natano was first elected to the Tuvaluan Parliament in 2002. He initially served in the opposition until the 2006 elections, where he was re-elected and appointed Minister of Public Utilities and Industries under Prime Minister Apisai Ielemia.
In the 2010 general election, Natano was again elected to Parliament. He ran for Prime Minister, receiving seven votes but losing to Maatia Toafa, who received eight. However, after Toafa's government was defeated in a vote of no confidence in December 2010, Willy Telavi became Prime Minister and appointed Natano as Minister of Communications and Deputy Prime Minister.
Natano was removed from this position after Telavi's removal as Prime Minister during the 2013 political crisis. He was re-elected to Parliament in the 2015 and 2019 general elections.
Election as Prime Minister
In the 2019 Tuvaluan parliamentary election, Natano was elected Prime Minister by a majority vote of Parliament. He had previously served as Director of Tuvalu Customs and Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning.
