Kayleen Bowen-Wright: A Disturbing Case of Fabricated Illness
The AccusationsKayleen Bowen-Wright, a 35-year-old Texas woman, has pleaded guilty to taking her healthy son to the doctor 323 times without medical necessity. It is believed that Bowen-Wright suffers from Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MSBP), a mental disorder that leads individuals to fabricate or induce illness in people under their care.
Medical Abuse
Bowen-Wright allegedly subjected her son to unnecessary medical exams and procedures, taking him to the hospital over 320 times and consenting to 13 major surgeries. According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the surgeries occurred between 2009 and 2016, while the boy was under constant treatment in hospitals and pediatric centers in Dallas and Houston.
CPS Intervention
Child Protective Services removed the boy from Bowen-Wright's custody in 2017 after staff at a Dallas hospital reported that the child did not have cancer or other illnesses his mother had claimed.
Father's Relief
The boy's father, Ryan Crawford, expressed relief at Bowen-Wright's guilty plea. "I'm glad that my wife has decided to do the right thing," he told the Star-Telegram. "Eventually, the lies were going to catch up." Crawford now has sole custody of the child, who is now 10 years old.
A Call for Awareness
Crawford also spoke out about the prevalence of medical child abuse. "Medical abuse is a silent epidemic," he said. "It's time that we move forward and make sure no other child has to suffer the abuse my son went through."
Consequences and Sentencing
Bowen-Wright faces up to 20 years in prison for felony injury to a child. Her sentencing is scheduled for October.
