Kazimierz Kutz: A Life Dedicated to Film and Politics
Early Life and EducationKazimierz Kutz was born in 1929 in Katowice, Poland. After graduating from high school in Mysłowice, he attended the Łódź Film School, graduating in 1954. During his studies, he worked as an assistant to renowned Polish director Andrzej Wajda.
Film Career
Kutz made his directorial debut in 1953 with a short film. His feature-length debut, "Cross of Valor" (1959), showcased his unique perspective on war, told through the stories of ordinary individuals.
Throughout the 1960s, Kutz directed several war dramas, including "Nobody Calls" (1960) and "People from the Train" (1960). He later returned to Silesia, where he founded the Silesia Film Company and became the chief director of Katowice television.
Kutz's most significant achievement during this period was the "Silesian trilogy":
"Salt of the Black Earth" (1969): The story of seven brothers who go to war during the Second Silesian Uprising.
"Pearl in the Crown" (1971): A strike by miners after their mine is flooded by German owners.
"Beads of a Rosary" (1979): The story of a retired miner who refuses to leave his home in a mining town.
Social and Political Involvement
Academia and Television:Lectured at the Silesian University's Radio and Television Faculty (1981-1983).
Taught directing at the Higher Theatre School in Kraków (1985-1991).
Served as the director of the Polish Television Centre in Katowice (1987-1990 and 1990-1991).
Politics:
Elected to the Polish Parliament (1997 onwards).Known as a vocal critic of the Polish government.
Advocated for Silesian autonomy and the development of the Silesian language.
Personal Life
Kutz is married to Iwona and has four children: Gabriel, Tymek, Wiktoria, and Kamila. In 1997, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Opole.
