Kelly Leitch: A Surgeon and Conservative Politician
Early Life and EducationKelly Leitch was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to parents who owned a construction company. She graduated from Queen's University in Kingston with a Bachelor of Arts in 1991, followed by a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Toronto in 1994. Leitch later obtained a Master of Business Administration from Dalhousie University in 1998 and completed her residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Toronto three years later. She also became a Clinical Pediatric Orthopaedic Fellow at the Los Angeles Children's Hospital.
Medical Career
Prior to pursuing politics, Leitch worked as a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. She is an active member of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario.
Entry into Politics
On July 15, 2013, Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed Leitch as Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women. As part of the February 2014 budget, Leitch announced plans to allocate $25 million towards addressing violence against Indigenous women.
Controversial Stances
During the 2015 election campaign, Leitch declared her pro-life stance, citing her experience as a pediatric surgeon.
Retirement from Politics
On January 23, 2018, Leitch announced she would not be seeking re-election to Parliament and would return to practicing surgery.
