Journey of Resilience: Kelly's Triumph Over a Rare Illness
A Rare and Devastating DiseaseKelly Bekkers, a 21-year-old Dutch woman, has endured a harrowing journey with chronic idiopathic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIP). This rare condition has rendered her digestive system completely dysfunctional, leaving her unable to eat through normal means for the past four and a half years.
Life-Sustaining Measures
Kelly relies on life-sustaining nutrient solutions delivered through an artery just three centimeters from her heart. Despite multiple life-threatening infections caused by the catheter, doctors have managed to successfully treat the sepsis. Yet, she remains at high risk of fatality should she fall ill again.
Refusing to Surrender
Unwavering in her determination, Kelly refuses to let her illness consume her life. "I live life to the fullest and I try to do as much as I can," she asserts. Despite the limitations imposed by her condition, she finds solace in socializing with friends who understand her dietary restrictions.
The Social Impact
Kelly acknowledges that the social aspect of her condition can be challenging. "When people get together for a good time, it revolves around food," she laments. "I can't partake in that, and I'm restricted to a cup of clear soup, looking on from the sidelines."
Embracing Difference
Despite the challenges, Kelly remains unashamed of her appearance, which includes colostomy bags and a tube for draining bile. She believes that the stigma surrounding ostomy bags is gradually diminishing, as evidenced by the positive reactions she receives from others.
Finding Purpose
Kelly maintains an active lifestyle by attending classes for students studying CIP. She also volunteers at a local sports club and finds fulfillment in her role as an advocate for others facing similar challenges.
The Gift of Companionship
Kelly's life took a positive turn with the arrival of her dog, Liefke. This extraordinary canine not only alerts her to potential emergencies but also assists her with daily tasks. "The only thing she can't do is iron," Kelly jokes.
Hope Amidst Uncertainty
CIP is a complex and often unpredictable condition, with varying degrees of severity. Treatment options may include dietary modifications, medications, and in some cases, surgery. While a cure is elusive, Kelly maintains a hopeful outlook, knowing that she has a network of support and that medical advancements continue to emerge.
