Gloria Guinness was a prominent socialite, fashion icon, and author of Harper's Bazaar from 1963 to 1971. She was born Gloria Rubio y Altorre in 1912 in Veracruz, Veracruz, Mexico. Her father, José Rafael Rubio Torres, was a well-known Mexican journalist, and her mother was named Maria Luisa Dolores Alatorre Diaz. Growing up, Gloria was incredibly beautiful and possessed a natural sense of style and intelligence.
Marriages and Relationships
Gloria's first marriage was to a German man named Scholtens, but the union did not last long, resulting in a divorce. Her second husband was Count Franz-Egon Maria Meinhard Engelbert Pius Aloysius Kaspar Ferdinand Dietrich of Fürstenberg-Herdringen, whom she married in October 1935. In 1942, Gloria married for the third time, this time to Ahmad-Abu-El-Fotouh Fakhry Bey, an Egyptian prince and the grandson of King Fuad I of Egypt. It was rumored that while married to the prince, Gloria had affairs with other men, including Duff Cooper, a British diplomat.
After her divorce in 1949, Gloria began a relationship with British millionaire and Member of Parliament Loel Guinness. They got married in April 1951 in Antibes. However, Gloria later confessed to her friend, writer Noël Coward, that she couldn't sleep with Loel because of his excessive flatulence. Despite this, Gloria was known for her refinement, grace, and elegance. She had a reputation for captivating men's hearts while simultaneously challenging their patience. Gloria was also a fashion enthusiast and an admirer of Cristóbal Balenciaga.
Style Icon and Legacy
Gloria Guinness was renowned for her minimalist style and famously declared, "Less is more." She quickly became an icon of elegance, and her column in Harper's Bazaar and glossy magazine photos were immensely popular. It is believed that Gloria Guinness was the first to popularize the famous capri pants, even before Jackie Kennedy. Her photographs inspired many renowned designers to create new stylistic solutions.
Gloria Guinness was known for her luxurious homes, owning six properties worldwide. She was also recognized for her generous philanthropic actions and donations.
On November 9, 1980, Gloria Guinness passed away at the age of 68 due to a heart attack in her own home, Villa Zanroc in Epalinges, Switzerland.
